Flying SAS With Your Dog: Cabin, Hold, Fees and How to Book

SAS takes dogs in the cabin and in the hold across Scandinavia and Europe. The catch is the bag: 40 × 25 × 23 cm is one of the smallest cabin sizes in Europe, so a dog that fits KLM may not fit SAS. Here's the short version, checked September 2026. Rules change, so confirm on SAS's pet page before you fly.

In the cabin: up to 8 kg, dog and bag together

Weight: max 8 kg including the carrier.
Bag: max 40 × 25 × 23 cm. It must be soft, fully closed, well ventilated, and both bite-proof and leak-proof.
Where: under the seat in front of you, with your dog inside for the whole flight.

In the hold: up to 50 kg with the crate

Heavier or bigger than the cabin rules allow? Then your dog goes in the hold, up to 50 kg including the crate, which must meet the IATA rules and be escape-proof. Two adult dogs of a similar size, up to 14 kg each, may share a crate, except on flights to the United States. Snub-nosed breeds such as bulldogs, pugs and Pekingese are not accepted in the hold.

What it costs

  • Cabin, domestic: €55 (about 550 SEK or NOK, 420 DKK).
  • Cabin, Scandinavia, Europe and the Middle East: €75.
  • Hold, domestic: €90.
  • Hold, Scandinavia, Europe and the Middle East: €169.

The fee is charged per flight, so a connection counts twice.

Where your dog has to go as freight

For China, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, your dog must be booked as cargo through a freight forwarder, not on your own ticket. For the UK, see our guide on taking your dog to the UK.

How to book your dog's spot

  • Call SAS customer service when you book, or up to 24 hours before departure, subject to space.
  • Papers: an EU pet passport, a microchip and a rabies shot at least 21 days old. See our EU pet passport guide.

Not sure if your dog fits the rules?

Our free Dog Flight Checker takes your dog's weight and tells you whether SAS, and 26 other airlines, take it in the cabin or the hold. It also checks whether your dog fits that small SAS bag.
