Flying Finnair With Your Dog: Cabin, Hold, Fees and How to Book

Finnair is one of the friendlier airlines for a bigger dog: the hold takes up to 75 kg including the crate, far more than most. For the cabin it is the usual 8 kg. Here's the short version, checked September 2026. Rules change, so confirm on Finnair's pet page before you fly.

In the cabin: up to 8 kg, dog and bag together

Weight: max 8 kg for dog and carrier together.
Soft bag: max 55 × 40 × 23 cm on Finnair flights, and 55 × 40 × 20 cm on flights operated by Norra.
Hard carrier: max 35 × 30 × 20 cm on both.
How many: one carrier per passenger, and normally two passengers with a pet per flight, so book early.

In the hold: up to 75 kg with the crate

Dog and crate together may weigh up to 75 kg on Finnair flights, and up to 50 kg on Norra flights. Your dog must be able to stand, lie down and turn around in the crate. Two dogs of a similar size, up to 14 kg each, may share one crate. The Dog Flight Checker works out the crate size from your dog's measurements.

What it costs

  • Cabin, within Europe: €60 when you book at least 7 days before departure, €65 within 6 days.
  • Hold, within Europe: €140.
  • Intercontinental: higher; Finnair shows the price when you add the pet.

The fee is per carrier and per flight, so a trip with a connection costs more.

Where your dog has to travel as cargo

To Great Britain, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and Australia, pets can only go as cargo, not with you as a passenger. For the UK, our guide on taking your dog to the UK shows the ferry and train routes instead.

How to book your dog's spot

  • Book at least 7 days before the flight and pay when you book, or later through Manage booking.
  • Papers: an EU pet passport, a microchip and a rabies shot at least 21 days old. See our EU pet passport guide.

Not sure if your dog fits the rules?

Our free Dog Flight Checker takes your dog's weight and tells you whether Finnair, and 26 other airlines, take it in the cabin or the hold, with a checklist for the vet dates.
