Road Trips With Your Dog: Safety, Packing List & First-Time Tips

A road trip is the easiest way to travel with a dog: no weight limits, no airline rules, and your co-pilot gets excited about every rest stop. It still goes better with a little planning. Here's the short version.

Buckle up — your dog too

A loose dog in a moving car is a safety risk for everyone in it. Use a crash-tested harness that clips into the seatbelt, or a secured crate in the back. Stop every 2–3 hours for water, a wee and a quick stretch — dogs get stiff and restless just like we do. And never leave your dog alone in a parked car, even "just for a minute": the temperature inside climbs fast, even with the windows cracked.

The packing list you actually need

• Food and water — more than you think, plus a collapsible bowl.
• Leash, harness, and a backup leash.
• Poop bags — always more than feels necessary.
• A blanket or bed that smells like home.
• Any medication, plus a copy of the vaccination records.
• A recent photo of your dog, just in case.

First trip? Practise first

If your dog hasn't travelled much, do a few short "practice runs" before the big trip — a 20-minute drive to the park works wonders. Keep the routine as normal as possible: same feeding times, same walks. And pack a favourite toy — familiar smells go a long way toward keeping a nervous traveller calm.
