5 Signs Your Dog Is Playing You

Dogs are smart. Not “solve a puzzle box” smart, but “know exactly which face gets them a second dinner” smart. If any of this sounds familiar, congratulations — you've been played, and you probably didn't even see it happen.

1. The fake limp

Three-legged sprint to the door when the mail carrier shows up. Dramatic, Oscar-worthy limp the second you notice them and reach for the leash instead. The limp always seems to switch legs too, which is medically suspicious.

2. Selective deafness

Whisper the word “treat” from two rooms away and they're there in 1.5 seconds. Call their name at full volume when it's time to leave the park? Total, profound hearing loss. Funny how that works.

3. The guilty look — before you've even noticed anything

You walk into the room, no idea anything's wrong, and they're already doing the ears-back, slow-tail-wag, avoiding-eye-contact routine. That's not guilt. That's a pre-emptive strike to soften you up before you spot the couch cushion.

Speaking of things they shouldn't have gotten into — here's what's actually safe to feed them.

4. Begging with the “I'm starving” eyes, five minutes after dinner

Bowl's empty. They just ate. And yet, here they are, giving you the full “haven't eaten in weeks” performance at the kitchen table. It's not hunger — it's a well-rehearsed act, and it works more often than it should.

5. Refusing to walk unless treats are visible

Leash goes on, dog plants all four feet like a tiny stubborn statue — until the treat pouch appears, at which point they're suddenly a very enthusiastic, very cooperative walking partner. Funny how fast that attitude changes.

So who's really in charge here?

If you recognized your dog in more than two of these, they've got you exactly where they want you — and honestly, that's kind of the deal we signed up for. A little manipulation for a lot of good company isn't the worst trade.

They are running the show anyway. You can at least decide what goes in the bowl — the free food calculator works out how much.
