Flying JetBlue With Your Dog: The Bag Is the Whole Rule
JetBlue is easy to understand: a small dog in a bag of 17 × 12.5 × 8.5 inches, on every domestic flight, and nothing in the hold at all. That bag is on the small side, so measure before you buy. Here's the short version, checked September 2026. Confirm on JetBlue's own pet page before you book.
In the cabin: one size, soft or hard
- Carrier: max 17 × 12.5 × 8.5 in (43 × 32 × 22 cm), and that is the same for a soft or a hard carrier.
- Weight: JetBlue publishes no weight limit for dog and bag together.
- How many: two pets per passenger, each in its own carrier, which means a second seat and a second fee. Six pets per flight.
- Where: the Main cabin only, with the carrier under the seat. No Mint, no exit row, no bulkhead, and no seat without space underneath.
Your dog must be able to turn around comfortably in the carrier, which is exactly where that 8.5 inch height gets tight. It compares your dog's length with what fits.
What it costs
$150 each way, and you can pay with TrueBlue points. Each segment with a pet also earns 300 TrueBlue points. Forgot a carrier? JetBlue sells one at the airport for $55.
Where it works, and where it doesn't
JetBlue accepts pets on all its domestic flights, but not on interline or codeshare bookings, so a ticket that continues on another airline won't work. Unaccompanied minors can't travel with a pet.
No hold and no cargo
JetBlue carries no dogs or cats in cargo, full stop. A dog that doesn't fit under the seat can't fly JetBlue. See our comparison of 27 airlines for the ones that do take a bigger dog.
Breed rules
JetBlue publishes no breed restrictions. With no hold, the snub-nosed bans other airlines use don't apply.
One thing to check at the gate
JetBlue's own pages disagree about whether the carrier counts as your personal item or as your carry-on. Either way you're giving up one bag, so pack as if the stricter version is true and you won't be caught out.
